2012-2013 Junior League of Atlanta Annual Awards
The 2012-13 League year has truly been a Journey of a Lifetime for our members. Thanks to our 1,300 Active Members, over 250 Provisional Members and nearly 2,000 Sustainer Members, as well as generous sponsors and friends in the community, the JLA has been able to give over a quarter of a million dollars in grants to our partner agencies and our amazing volunteers contributed nearly 75,000 volunteer hours valued at more than $1.5 million serving over 700,000 women & children in Atlanta.
On May 20, 2013 at our May GMM and Awards Banquet, we honored many amazing JLA members and friends in the community who have contributed to this year's success.

| Jim Miller, Chairman and CEO of Fidelity Bank, has been a dedicated friend of the Junior League of Atlanta for nearly 30 years. Whether through his service on our Community Advisory Board, sponsoring the Fidelity Award presented annually to our members, or through his vocal championing of our work, we have been immensely grateful for his presence. | The Empowerment Award is proudly given to one individual every year who has overcome great obstacles to achieve self-sufficiency. In addition, it honors the Junior League of Atlanta community partner who has played a pivotal role in the individual's path to success. This year’s winner is Kourtne Hicks and the Genesis Shelter. Kourtne has overcome incredible obstacles to improve her life. While at Genesis Shelter, Kourtne worked to gain new life skills and put them to good use. As a result of this hard work, Kourtne’s family has moved into their own apartment and obtained full-time employment with benefits. Her long-term goal is to obtain her Bachelor’s degree in theology. | This year, we honored six amazing high school students for their work in the community with an $1,100 scholarship, in partnership with 11Alive and the Arby's Foundation. Marie’s extraordinary work ethic in the JLA and community, coupled with her with and genuine kindness, make her exceptionally qualified for recognition. Under Marie’s leadership, we raised more than half of a million dollars this year! |
Each year, the Association of Junior Leagues International selects award winners from amongst the 292 Junior Leauges around the world. This year, one of our own JLA members was awarded the very special AJLI Rising Star award, given to members with less than three years of Active membership status who are doing great things in the League. | This year’s Provisional Member of the Year was part of the Winter 2013 class. She went above and beyond by completing 49 points to complete her Provisional Year, when a member only needs 30 points! Quiana was nominated by three of her own peers for her involvement in the provisional program. One of Quina’s nominators pointed out that she was so intent on attending as many League events as possible that she even attended a Fundamental meeting on her birthday! She went on to say that “it’s young women like her that exemplify why I joined the JLA!” | This year’s Active of the Year award recipient has spent countless hours as a Provisional Advisor. Just in her second active year, she’s made a huge impact on our newest members by making them feel part of the Junior League family right away. Sarah Emily’s nominator was quoted saying “Sarah Emily has influenced not only me, but my entire small group to become a force for impact and change. She influenced our provisional group to go above and beyond the requirements and be involved in as many activities as possible in the league.” | This woman is remarkable. Currently, Courntey is serving as Chair of the Sustainer Council and will be returning to this position next League year. This amazing Sustainer can be found on must Sundays assisting the staff and other volunteers at Nearly New. She was instrumental in organizing the back room of the store and getting other Sustainers involved in the Shop. She is credited with re‐energizing the Nearly New staff and re‐engaging Sustainers at Nearly New! One of Courtney’s three nominators said “Courtney commits herself 110% to every committee and to her friends. She is fun, organized and very energetic. She’s done too many great things this year to name them all but as one of her nominators went on to say, you would be hard pressed to find a better volunteer!” |
Chair Candace Bazemore and members Tanya Anderson Woodward, Caroline Bailey, Yvette Dupree, Lathem Gordon, Meghan Harrison, Cara Hergenroether, Meg Keiley-Listermann, Gabby Leon, Christy Overall, Edwina Robinson, Natalie Tindall This wonderful committee is building the leadership capacity within our very own organization so that our members' abilities will allow them to provide board service and skilled volunteering to our community partners and beyond. One of the three Junior League members who nominated this committee is quoted saying “The committee has reinvigorated training and brought out record numbers of members to events. They have held over 30 programs this year alone! Attendees rave about the quality of the training and how they can incorporate it into their JLA and professional lives.” |
Chair Marquetta Bryan (right) and members Jana Chesley, Jessica Choice, UnChu Crosby, Chelsea Eubank, Samantha Evans, Jessie Frederick, Meghann Gibbons, Lisa Jordan, Cindy Khuu. These dedicated Committee members volunteered on Saturdays, Sundays, during the week, and sometimes as early as 6 am, in rainy and cold temperatures ‐ all the time representative the League and serving the community with passion, grace and excellence all the while serving 13,068 children. The nominator told us “The committee has been so passionate about educating the community about real and simple ways to begin to combat childhood obesity, methods that can be put in place inexpensively and immediately.” |
