PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Invitations are powerful. When you invite someone to be part of a gathering or a special event, you may make a friend for life.

This year I have been fortunate to invite four dynamic women to join the Junior League of Atlanta, Inc. The new Provisionals are ecstatic to have the opportunity to join an organization with a legacy of making a difference in the community. In turn, I am thrilled to be their sponsor.

Reflecting on the reasons why I joined the Junior League after being invited by Erika Dorr Marshall so many years ago, I joined to have wonderful volunteer opportunities in the community. I also joined to make friends. The training provided to me as a volunteer was a benefit of my membership that has served me both at the JLA and in the workplace.

My experience is not unique. “I joined because I wanted to be part of a women’s organization that is worldwide; in fact, I first found out about the Junior League through a friend in the San Antonio Junior League,” said Marnice Davis who is a Provisional this year. “Thanks for your invitation to sponsor me Cynthia.” New provisional Jen Blackburn shared with me that her friends are all part of the JLA. “What a great way to give back to the community while volunteering with my friends!”

As we head into the holiday season and reflect on all that we hold dear, let us also take time to value the power of invitations – and the reward of being a life-long member of the Junior League.

EDUCATION STATION

Gypsy beads…Dazzling swords…Magic wands…These are some of the words that make up the language of the Atlanta Opera Education placement.

The task of opening the world of opera to children is entertaining yet challenging, but one that our placement volunteers have wholeheartedly embraced. The objective of the placement is to expose children to the beauty of opera while introducing them to the different aspects of a production (costumes, stage craft, etc.).

The Atlanta Opera Education placement members work to achieve those goals by hosting the arts and crafts tables at Family Day in October and Opera Carnival in February. In addition, volunteers assist the children in creating wonderful objects from ribbon, cardboard and glitter.

For our arts and crafts inspirations, the placement volunteers look to an opera in the company’s current season. For Family Day, our muse was Carmen and for the Opera Carnival it will be Little Red Riding Hood. The crafts are a fanciful way for the children to take part in the opera experience. By using their own imagination, they transform cardboard into enchanted “swords” and bamboo sticks & Styrofoam balls into magic “wands”. It is amazing how quickly these charmed alterations take place!

Our wish is that children feel connected with the opera on some level and that they leave with a budding eagerness to learn more about it.

We hope that you and your family will join us for our next event, Opera Carnival, which will be held at the Opera Center on West Peachtree Street. Mark your calendars for this spectacular event which will take place on Saturday, February 26, 2005. Members of the Atlanta Opera will be performing their children’s opera, Little Red Riding Hood, throughout the day and Junior League volunteers will be at the arts and crafts tables ready to help little hands create marvelous new inventions.

See you in February!

SELF NOMINATE FOR LEADERSHIP!

Now is your chance to step up to League Leadership!

Were you aware that the League chooses its leaders from members who voluntarily submit their names for consideration? Since the League only considers those members who have submitted their names, we rely on every member to thoughtfully consider self-nomination.

In the mail in November, you will receive a form containing all the leadership positions that will be slated by the Nominating Committee in February 2005, including a job description for each position. You can also find this form on the JLA website at:

 http://www.jlatlanta.org/publications/pdffiles/SelfNominate2005.pdf

The "slating" process is the process by which the League,  through its Nominating Committee, chooses its Board members and policy-making committee chairs.

Why should you consider self-nomination?

Do you have a special skill that you would like to share with the League? Or, do you want to develop leadership, organizational, public speaking or other skills through chairing a committee or council? Now is the time to consider taking on a leadership role with the League! The League allows you not only to experiment with new roles but expand your skill sets in others.

The Nominating Committee uses objective criteria in assessing your strengths and development needs. Each member who self nominates gets to meet with a Nominating Committee representative who will help you to outline what you'd like to accomplish or learn in the upcoming year.

Learn to Lead through the League!  Self-nominate today!

A second process, called Willingness to Serve, will follow later in the League year and you can look to the January Hotline and HotLine Highlights for a listing of the non-slated leadership positions.

CHILDWATCH

On October 23, the Junior League of Atlanta held its 3rd Annual ChildWatch Visitation Program planned and executed by the Community Needs Assessment Committee. ChildWatch was designed by the Children's Defense Fund to allow community members to see first-hand what is happening to our children. This program puts the faces and stories of real children to the statistics and reports.  ChildWatch programs include onsite visits to organizations serving children and families and briefings by experts on the issues.

The goals of ChildWatch visits are to personalize child suffering and create a sense of urgency about children's needs.  As a result, participants are able to make the connection between the child they see suffering and local, state and federal budget priorities and policies.  Participants also brainstorm positive alternatives and steps they and others can take to correct or alleviate the problems identified.

This year's ChildWatch was attended by 17 people and exceeded the initial capacity of 12!  The focus this year was on education issues for children at-risk. Sites visited included:

·         The Frazer Center, a private nonprofit center for the rehabilitation of children and adults with disabilities.  The Frazer Center serves children with disabilities and mainstreamed children in the same educational environment, in which early intervention may be delivered to young children with disabilities.

·         Atlanta Urban Ministries:  Participants talked with the after school tutoring program coordinator and the Homeless Student Liaison from the Atlanta Public School system about the educational challenges faced by homeless children.

·         The Bridge residential treatment center, which serves children with mental health needs and victims of abuse and neglect.  Participants received a guided tour of the facility from three youth who are residents of the program.

Another ChildWatch Program will be held in the spring, so look for more information.  The spring ChildWatch will include increased outreach to non-League members, so encourage your friends, neighbors and co-workers to come with you!

GIRLS ROUNDTABLE

This year’s Girls Roundtable Luncheon hosted by the Community Outreach Council and the Community Needs Assessment Committee, tackled the hot topic of “Playground Power: Relational Aggression and Mean Girls Syndrome.”

Representatives from schools and agencies serving girls in Metro Atlanta came together on October 20 at JLA Headquarters to gather information, share ideas and forge new partnerships to help them address the issue more effectively.

Guest presenter, Dr. Jennifer Thorpe, Ph.D., a child and adolescent psychologist, presented the facts and figures behind the bullying trends of today’s school-aged girls. Participants discussed the history of relational aggression, learned what the current research reveals on the topic and shared how they are combating it within their own organizations.

Lunch for the approximately 50 participants was donated by Brown’s Foodservice. The Girls Roundtable is designed to provide organizations working with girls in our community a forum to educate themselves on current issues and network with others sharing similar goals and needs.

A big thanks to Holly Bounds, Katherine Columbo Cline, Cara Fox, Robin Kirkman and Tricia Taylor for making the 2nd Annual Girls Roundtable a success!

GENERATION TO GENERATION

The Junior League of Atlanta is proud to offer a volunteer opportunity for YOU and your family! Any age child is invited and can make a difference in someone else’s life! You choose a volunteer time that suits your family!

Generation to Generation, a volunteer organization benefiting Emory Healthcare’s Wesley Woods Center’s Budd Terrace, brings together community-minded moms, dads and kids with residents of the Wesley Woods Retirement Center. The Generation to Generation philosophy is that each generation gives, grows and gains by simply being together!

Bring your family and get to know a new resident or “Grand-Friend” as they are called. You and your grand-friend might play a game, share a story, or make a craft, but whatever you do, everyone benefits from this special time. Activities are planned in advance – all you need to do is come and join in the fun.

Generation to Generation meets the first Tuesday of each month from 10 to 11a.m. and the third Wednesday of each month from 4 to 5 p.m. Wesley Woods is located at 1821 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, 30329. You may choose the most convenient time for you and your family.

Adults are required to complete a TB skin test (offered at Wesley Woods) before working with the seniors. Please contact Lauren Monroe (404-603-9517) if you and your family would like to participate. You can also visit www.givegaingrow.org for more information.

If you are looking for a quick appetizer this holiday season for a party or a family movie night, try this delicious treat from Come On In, Recipes from the Junior League of Jackson, Mississippi, one of many swapped books available at JLA Headquarters and during the sale on December 2!

Mushroom Puffs p. 35
Come On In, Recipes from the Junior League of Jackson, Mississippi

Yields 48

Ingredients:
2 packages crescent dinner rolls
1 package cream cheese (8 oz), room temperature
1 can mushrooms (4 oz), drained, chopped
2 green onions, chopped
1 teaspoon seasoned salt
1 large egg
2 Tablespoons poppy seeds

Preheat oven to 375°. Lay out crescent roll dough and press perforations to seal. Mix cream cheese, mushrooms, onions, and salt and spread over dough. Roll up jelly roll fashion and slice into 1” pieces. Brush with egg, sprinkle with poppy seeds and bake at 375° for 10 minutes.  Serve hot.

This recipe can be prepared ahead up to the baking point and then frozen until time to cook. In fact, the mushroom roll is easier to slice when frozen.

MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION

Where do you go when you know someone in need of mental health care?

The National Mental Health Association (“NMHA”) website provides the following suggestions for individuals seeking mental health care:

• Contact your local mental health association – check the yellow pages for the listing.
• It may also be helpful to contact your clergyperson or family physician and spend a few minutes describing the symptoms – often these individuals can direct you to the type of mental health care professional that you need. The type of care provider needed will depend on both the nature of the problem and whether the person in need of care is an adult or a child.
• Other resources you may contact: your local health department’s mental health division, private family service agencies, marriage and family counselors, hotlines and other mental health organizations.
• After doing some initial research, make the call to a mental health care provider. Ask about their approach to treatment, their philosophy, and whether they specialize in a particular area, such as family or child counseling, or in a subject area, such as divorce counseling.

If you or someone you know is concerned about mental health, do not hesitate to ask for help. With so many resources and options available, you should be able to locate a provider in no time!

The following organizations are also good sources for locating mental health providers in your area:

OCTOBER SURVEY RESULTS

A sampling of the October survey results follows.

What is your favorite Community Placement and Why?

Georgia Radio Reading Service
I enjoyed reading and it was an easy placement to get your hours GARR.

Community Sampler
It was a great way to get a taste of the many opportunities available through the JLA.

Political Affairs
You can truly see the impact we can have in changing our world.

Children's Health Care-Scottish Rite
It’s well-organized and has a convenient location. Coordinators are very helpful.

American Red Cross
There is constant ongoing training, and our placement chairs are very dynamic. They make sure we meet once a month so we can not only learn about volunteer opportunities, but so that we can get to know one another better.

Community Placement Evaluation Committee (C.P.E.C.)
I was able to learn about our community placements and make decisions about where our volunteers and money were allocated

Young Audiences
I keep coming back because of the great group of women in the group, outstanding leadership and organization, clearly defined expectations, flexible ways, hours and opportunities to get my volunteer hours in and it is convenient to my area of town. Also, I believe in YA's mission of arts in every school and that art is a cornerstone of education.

PROVISIONAL DEVELOPMENT

As in previous years, JLA is taking part in the annual Kroger Can-A-Thon, benefiting the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Provisionals and their respective Advisors will be working at various Kroger stores throughout Metro Atlanta on Saturday, November 20.  The Can-A-Thon will continue through Sunday, November 21.

We hope League members will come out and support us. Provisionals and Advisors will be easy to spot! They'll be wearing their adorable JLA T-shirts and asking you to donate canned goods.

This project is very important to us and the community. It garners great visibility for the League, affords the Provisionals with their first opportunity to represent this great organization in the community, and helps to feed so many in need throughout Atlanta.

Come see us and help someone have a Happy Thanksgiving!

ANNUAL GIVING

Have you supported your JLA District lately?

THE ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN

DISTRICT CHALLENGE IS UNDERWAY!

The JLA’s Annual Giving Campaign committee has launched the 2004-2005 District Challenge. The goal is for each District to donate at least $500 to the campaign. The District collecting the most per capita will receive an End of Year party hosted by the Annual Giving Campaign committee.

Remember…the Annual Giving Campaign allows the League to serve the community, diversify our revenue stream and increase our financial health and stability. As our 2004-2005 theme states, we need your help to “plant” so that we can “grow” the League as a leader in our community.

Please participate today. It’s simple! You can donate online using a credit card at www.jlatlanta.org/donate or download the form which you can send with your contribution to Headquarters. Remember, you can increase your gift by using your or your spouse’s Corporate Matching program.

Thank You for being part of the Family Giving Tree!

We would like to thank everyone who has donated already this year to the Annual Giving Campaign:
