The Junior Leagues of Georgia: Million Minute Read

This past summer, the Georgia Pre-K enrolled the one millionth student in the program!  In celebration of that milestone and the million more Pre-K students that are to come, the Junior Leagues of Georgia have committed to read 1,000,000 minutes to Georgia's children this year.  The Junior League of Atlanta was featured this morning on CBS Better Mornings for our Million Minute Read program. JLA President Susannah Balish was interviewed about what the League is doing to promote literacy in Georgia and in our community.  Click here to see a clip from the CBS Better Mornings feature

Junior League members have another opportunity this year to give children a greater chance to succeed in school!  It is The Junior Leagues of Georgia: Million Minute Read!  Reading aloud to children is one of the best ways to facilitate their oral language and vocabulary development. Studies have proven that children who are exposed to a rich vocabulary have a greater chance for success in school. It’s a critical component of early childhood education, and a great opportunity for Junior League volunteers to make a difference!

We need all Junior League members to help us reach our 1,000,000 minute goal!  Join in this endeavor, and make a lasting impact in the lives of children.

The Million Minute Read is being conducted in partnership with Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning and their "A Million Dreams and Counting" program. Established in 1993, Bright from the Start provides the state’s four-year-old children with high quality preschool experiences.

"The Million Minute Read really leverages the focus the Junior League of Atlanta has put on our League Initiative (Early Childhood Education), and specifically supports our 3 for 3s program by providing opportunities for our volunteers to read to children," says Meg Keiley-Listermann, League Initiative Chair. Many of the JLA’s volunteer opportunities already include reading to children, and those minutes, as well as those coming from new activities, will count towards the collective one million minute goal.

Million Minute Read Week

February 22-28, 2010 is the Junior Leagues of Georgia: Million Minute Read Week.  This is a concentrated reading effort for all League members, and was kicked off with a special event on February 22 at the Georgia State Capitol.  All 12 Junior Leagues from Georgia joined Lt. Governor Casey Cagle on the steps of the Capitol to read to two Pre-K classes and host literacy activities.  Afterwards, the presidents will meet with various legislators regarding the importance of early childhood education to our state. Reading Under the Stars Event

The Junior Leagues of Georgia, in conjunction with Bright from the Start, held an event this August at the Governor’s Mansion to both celebrate the millionth child entering Georgia’s Pre-K program and to kick off the Junior League’s Million Minute Read Campaign. The "Reading Under the Stars" event hosted more than 70 Pre-K students from across the state of Georgia. First Lady Mary Purdue read Bedtime in the Jungle by John Butler, and Junior League volunteers provided puppet crafts, face painting, and bookmark making. Each child received a copy of the book and a special Handmade by JLA blanket for naptime at their Pre-K center.  The Junior League of Atlanta's Early Childhood Education committee played a key role in putting on this event.  Watch the story time reading on the Mansion Lawn.
