While Atlanta Public Schools (APS) has seen graduation rates rise to 86% for the class of 2023, only 1 in 3 students is proficient in reading by the crucial third-grade benchmark. This gap in literacy skills has remained largely unchanged for nearly three decades and continues to affect the future success of individual students and the community as a whole.

And this is why we’re lacing up our shoes for literacy!

At the Junior League of Atlanta, we believe that every child, in every family, in every neighborhood of Atlanta must have access to the language and literacy skills necessary for success. Our “Every Child Reads” initiative is dedicated to empowering the self-determination of Atlanta’s women and children by ensuring they have the foundational literacy skills needed to thrive. 

We know that literacy is not just a school issue—it requires a community-wide effort and the Junior League of Atlanta has made a commitment to work tirelessly with our community partners to tackle literacy head-on. By joining us at the Literacy Walk, you can help raise awareness of this critical issue and demonstrate your commitment to closing the literacy gap in our community. Together, we can raise our voices and ensure ALL children have access to the resources they need to be successful in school and beyond. 

The Literacy Walk is a family-friendly event that encourages participants of all ages to go the extra mile for literacy. The event will feature activities for the whole family and a vendor market for adults and children to learn about local efforts and ways to get involved with organizations promoting literacy awareness.
