Description

Did you know that 36% of third graders across Georgia are not reading at grade level, according to a recent study by the Annie E Casey Foundation?

And this is why we’re lacing up our shoes for literacy

  • This statistic isn’t just a number, it holds significant implications for the future of children.
  • Only 11% of Atlanta Public School children who are economically disadvantaged read proficiently by third grade and data supports children who cannot read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.
  • The gaps in opportunity in Atlanta are wide, and socioeconomic factors play a huge part in the disparities. 55% of those who are non-economically disadvantaged read by third grade.

The Junior League of Atlanta’s Literacy Walk, in partnership with the 2023 ATL Year of the Youth Initiative, aims to address these disparities head-on. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to develop strong reading skills, regardless of their background.

Mayor Andre Dickens proudly initiated the ATL Year of the Youth Initiative, with a singular goal in mind: to make Atlanta the most exceptional place for children to grow up. This visionary initiative is designed to grant Atlanta’s children, youth, and young adults unparalleled access to the city’s rich tapestry of high-quality cultural and educational opportunities.

At the Junior League of Atlanta, we believe that all women and children should be self-determined and we believe our community involvement will make the largest impact. By participating in Literacy Walk, you can help us raise awareness about the illiteracy crisis in our city, supporting our vision of being a catalyst for community change by empowering women who are passionately focused on the health, education, and welfare of women and children. Together, we can raise our voices and ensure ALL children have access to the resources they need to be successful in school and beyond.

The Literacy Walk is a family-friendly event that encourages participants of all ages to go the extra mile for literacy. The event will feature face painting, a celebrity reader, treats for the whole family, and a vendor market for adults and children to learn about local efforts and ways to get involved with organizations promoting literacy awareness.
